Boeotia Project
The Boeotia Ancient Cities project is a long-running archaeological project, currently led by the universities of Leiden, Ljubljana and Cambridge, using field-survey and geophysics methods to study some of the great cities that existed in ancient Greece.
My involvement started in 2006, where I was able to run a test using hand-held computers and satellite navigation to record the areas surveyed during the field season. Previously this was done using measuring tapes, compasses, pacing and eyeballing old maps. However, the dense foliage and sometimes steep slopes in the area makes these practices difficult or even impossible at times.
I’ve written a BA dissertation on my findings during the first season, which I will publish here shortly. During the 2007 season I returned to the project, running more tests with a more elaborate software package. The report on this is also forthcoming.
